On the 2nd of June 2024, The Volta Organization visited the Good Samaritan Mathare Children's Home and Rehabilitation Centre to bring smiles to the kids there. We started our day at the Nairobi Cinema, did some shopping, and then headed to the center. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed and spent time getting to know the students in classes 6, 7, and 8. Our session focused on educating them about good hygiene, HIV/AIDS, and the dangers of drugs.

I specifically tackled the issue of drug abuse, an area where I felt I could make a significant impact. Coming from a place where many street kids have fallen into drug use, particularly weed and glue, I understood the gravity of the situation. I also advised them on the dangers of alcohol abuse and discussed the reasons people turn to drugs. The session was highly interactive, and the children engaged enthusiastically, which helped them understand these critical issues. We also talked about their families, and hearing some of their stories was incredibly emotional for me. We also aimed to motivate them to stay strong and persevere through challenges. Sharing our shopping items with them brought joy, and seeing their smiles made our efforts worthwhile.

As the session ended, the children were reluctant to see us go, and we promised to return with even more support next time. Conversations among my colleagues revealed plans to further mentor and sponsor some of the kids, with Deng Nyuon sharing his intention to sponsor a child after his studies. Deng’s commitment goes way back to his humble beginnings. As we left, our hearts were full, motivated to continue our work with Volta, spreading hope and smiles across different communities, with high schools next on our journey. Today reaffirmed that every small act can contribute to a larger wave of positive change in society.

In addition to our educational session, we organized various fun activities and games to build a sense of camaraderie and trust with the children. We played soccer, organized art sessions, and even had a small talent show where the kids showcased their singing and dancing skills. These activities were not just for fun; they were designed to boost the children's self-esteem and encourage them to pursue their passions.

We also provided the center with essential supplies, including books, stationery, and personal hygiene products. The donation aimed to support their educational needs and promote a healthier living environment. Our visit was covered by a local news outlet, raising awareness about the challenges faced by children in rehabilitation centers and the importance of community support.

Our collaboration with local health professionals ensured that the information shared during our session was accurate and impactful. We left educational pamphlets and contact information for organizations that offer support for substance abuse and HIV/AIDS. This provided the children with resources they could use long after our visit. Reflecting on the day, we recognized the resilience and potential of the children at the Good Samaritan Mathare Children's Home. Their eagerness to learn and their dreams for the future inspired us. We are committed to maintaining a long-term relationship with the center, providing continuous support and opportunities for these children to thrive.
